HC Plastics News: Bayer MaterialScience (BMS) said at a press conference that it has developed the first bio-based polyurethane crosslinking agent.

Company claims that its cyclopentane diisocyanate (PDI) is a new type of isocyanate with a unit carbon content of 70%. Daniel Meyer, head of the coatings, adhesives, specialty products business, and member of the BMS Executive Committee, said the company's recent innovations also include the world's leading PDI derivatives as curing agents for coatings and adhesives.

Meyer told reporters and industry experts that the company plans to announce the first PDI-based product in the city in April 2015, and began commercial manufacturing with a capacity of up to 20,000 tons/year (enough to cover 20 million vehicles) in 2016 . He said that compared with the existing two-component polyurethane coatings, the material's topcoat treatment rate is 30% faster. In the medium term, it is likely to be suitable for mixed plastics, composite materials and metal bottom coatings.

This innovation is the result of the cooperation between BMS, the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany and the German machinery and equipment manufacturer DURR.
